Stanley Paris and Steve Pettengill placed Second
In the every other year 635 mile race from Newport, Rhode Island to Bermuda, Kiwi Spirit II placed second on both legs in a field of 21 boats. The first leg was sailed single handed by Stanley Paris who came in second after a hard fought race. He was also at 83, the oldest skipper in the event. He received a standing ovation for his effort at the awards ceremony. For the second leg Stanley was joined by Steve Pettengill and again came in second some hours ahead of the third boat to finish. “I was so happy with my solo performance” said Stanley. “After four failed attempts to solo circumnavigate it was good to be able to beat both amateurs and some professionals in their boats designed for racing. I feel somewhat vindicated.”
